What is a Chemical Peel?
As the name suggests, a chemical peel involves the application of a chemical solution which acts as a peeling agent on problem areas with skin concerns such as sun damage, wrinkles, acne, scarring and pigmentation.
Depending on your specific skin type and condition, the most appropriate type of chemical peel(s) will be selected by the doctor and a treatment program will be tailored according to your needs. Sometimes, chemical peels may be combined with other cosmetic treatments such as microneedling, anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers to provide faster and improved results.

Types of Chemical Peels
At MY Natural Look, we currently offer superficial (acts through the epidermis) chemical peels to treat a wide variety of skin problems such as:
A superficial peel removes the top layer of dead skin cells and is able to produce immediate visible cosmetic results, revealing refreshed, softer and smoother complexion. Superficial peels are personally performed by our qualified doctor and need to be repeated on several occasions for a noticeable improvement of skin concerns. Depending on the skin concern being treated and type of chemical peel used, a series of 5-8 peels every 2-4 weeks accompanied by using a prescribed skincare regime at home is recommended to achieve and maintain the best possible results.
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) are naturally occurring carboxylic acids derived from fruit and milk sugars. Glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane and the smallest of the AHA molecules. Due to its smaller molecular size and thereby better penetration, glycolic acid is believed to be more reliable for skincare than other AHAs such as lactic acid.
Glycolic Acid Peel Melbourne
Glycolic acid acts on the epidermis of the skin by exfoliating surface dead cells that make the skin look dull and rough. It also penetrates under the epidermis where it acts to disperse melanin (pigment in the basal cells), increases the production of new and younger-looking cells, and restores hydration and plumpness in the skin through an increase in dermal fillers and collagen density.
Glycolic acid peels can be used to promote softer, smoother skin, fade wrinkles, lighten age spots and decrease blemishes. Nicknamed the “lunchtime peel”, it is a very short procedure which patients can go for during the lunch break and resume daily tasks after the treatment.
Different skin problems respond to different peels. In the case of oily and acne-prone skin, it responds well to salicylic acid (a BHA) as it is oil-soluble and penetrates deeper into the skin. It is perfect for clearing oily and clogged pores, removing dirt and sebum.
Two weeks before your chemical peel you will need to start preparing your skin:For all chemical peels – Cleanse once a day with a specialised cleanser recommend by your doctor as appropriate for your particular skin type.
For Glycolic Acid Peels – Cleanse once a day with a specialised Glycolic Acid cleanser and use a specialised pre-peel product recommend by your doctor. The pre-peel enhancement product is essential to prepare your skin’s condition for the treatment, reduce side effects and ensure better results.
It is also essential to protect your skin from sun exposure and use at least an SPF30+ sunscreen every day.
The deeper the peel, the greater the likelihood of experiencing side effects, with increased recovery time needed. Some side effects that can occur include swelling, redness and stinging.
Superficial peels may just cause mild irritation and require minimal post-peel care.
Post-treatment care will depend of the type of peel performed and your skin’s reaction to the peel. A Quick Recovery Cream containing anti-inflammatory ingredients and emollients may be prescribed by your doctor as needed.
After a chemical peel, your skin will need gentle care and may be more sensitive to UV light.
- Use a gentle facial cleanser and good hydrating moisturizer containing dermal fillers 2-3 times daily.
- Avoid scrubs, exfoliants and acne cleansers unless otherwise instructed. These products will only further irritate the skin, therefore slowing down the healing process.
- Do not pick or peel away any crusts that may form after a chemical peel. Removing the skin prematurely can lead to complications such as hyper-pigmentation. To gently remove dead skin, the use of Micro-dermabrasion Paste is recommended a few days after the peel is performed.
- It is essential to protect your skin from sun exposure by using at least an SPF30+ sunscreen every day
